The combination of rain (thunderstorms) and cold (40 degrees) was taxing enought that only two finished the course.
The following year the weather was much improved, and Jim Amelung set a record that still stands, completing the double century in just over 10 hours.
Since then records have been set by tandems, women, HPV's and recumbents, but to date, none have bested Amelung's '03 ride. There is a standing $50 Bounty for anyone who can finish the 200 miles in record time, but weather and wind have, thus far, frustrated all challengers.

Check in Friday from 2PM - 9PM - Saturday 5AM - 6AM. If the whole double century seems a bit much, try the Balltown 100. You see most of the panoramic views, the Balltown ridge, and since the ride ends in Balltown, you can spend some time at the oldest operating restaurant in Iowa. Brietbach's was once a Pony Express Station, and in recent years the establishment has burned and been rebuilt two times! Good food in a small Iowa town (Pop under 200) with a great view makes this a good spot to wait for your ride back to DeWitt!
The Shuttle
100 mile riders will need to have a way back to DeWitt. If you don't have support, we can shuttle you back for a small fee. Riders will have to wait until all 200 mile riders have been through Balltown. The staff at the time station provides transportation, so they cannot depart until all participants are accounted for!

General Info
The headquarters and general rules are the same as the Classic. The route is the first half of the Classic route and the maps and cue sheet are available from the Classic route section.

</ContentTemplate></ajaxToolkit:TabPanel></ajaxToolkit:TabContainer></asp:Content>
